At the Metuchen Branch YMCA, we have programs and activities specially developed to keep older adults healthy and active…going places, doing new things and interacting with other members. This is the place where older adults do it all; from physical activities like Younger by the Years exercise class, Water Aerobics and Seniorcize to day trips like the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse and much more!

Here is a list of the wonderful classes and activities that we offer:

  • Younger By The Years*-Exercise program geared for older adult members. Participants establish their own goals so people of all ages and levels will fit in. Classes meet in the gym(located on the first floor) on M-W-F from 10:15-11AM. Fee: free for full YMCA members, Program Members( Limited membership)$40 program membership fee, fitness card $100 contains 10 classes, your card will be punched foreach class that you attend. (Class is listed on the Group Exercise Class Schedule) Fee*
  • SilverSneakers1-Muscular Strength and Range of Movement*-Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support. Classes are offered on Tuesday/Thursday from 12-12:45PM. Fee : free for YMCA members, $40 program membership is required(Class is listed on the Group Exercise Class Schedule). Fee*.
  • SilverSmeakers-YogaStretch*-YogaStretch is the newest SilverSneakers group exercise class. YogaStretch is designed to physically and mentally engage you with a variety of safe and fun yoga postures and breathing exercises. Using a chiar for support, participants work at their own pace to build flexibility and endurance while learning to relax and think more clearly. Classes are offered on Fridays from 10:30-11:30AM.(Class is listed on the Group Exercise Class Schedule) Fee*.
  • Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi for Beginners and Intermediates-Tai Chi fron the Arthritis Foundation has the potential to reduce pain and stiffness, while improving balance and flexibility. Its agile steps and range of motion exercises are done in higher stances than those normally found in Tai Chi, making it easer and more comfortable to learn. Registration is required. Instructor: Barbara Lorenz, Arthritis Foundation Certified Teacher.(Class is listed on the Group Exercise Class Schedule) Fee*

Program Members ($40 fee) must purchase a Fitness Class Card, which is good for ten classes. Your FitnessClass Card will be validated at each class you attend by the front desk.

 

  • Adult Fitness Development I - Eight week course that consists of proper technique and form with the exercise equipment in the fitness center. The fee for this class is $45 for members and $60 for program members( a $40 program membership fee is required)Class meets on Tuesday from 1:30-2:30PM in the Hale Wellness Center. Space is limited so registration is required, contact Jean Vick at 732 548-2044, ext 217 for class dates.
  • Adult Fitness Development II-Eight week course that consists of proper technique and form with the exercise equipment in the fitness center. Each week a different muscle group will be targeted.The fee for this class is $45 for members and $60 for program members( a $40 program membership fee is required) Class meets on Thursdays from 1:30-2:30PM in the Hale Wellness Center.Space is limited so registration is required, contact Jean Vick at 732 548-2044, ext 217 for class dates.
  • Walk Your Way To The 5K-Be a part of the Metuchen-Edison-Woodbridge YMCA Janice Garbolino Memorial Day 5K race. The race is scheduled for September 27, 2008. To get ready for this evetn, our staff will rpovide training in our fitness center on the treadmill as well as on the course itself. Each class of this five week program will consist of a training session and homework so that you will be able to work your way up to the necessary endurance to complete the race. In addition, two classes will be held on the race course located at Roosevelt Park, Edison, NJ. The first class will be held at the park on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 from 2-3PM and continued on Tuesdays from 2-3PM ending September 23, 2008. At the end of the class, register for the 5K and have fun!. The fee for this class is $10 for full members and $15 with a program membership.
  • Ceramics Class- The Metuchen Senior Citizen Center offers a ceramic class on Mondays from 9:30-11:30AM at the Center located at 15 Center Street. You must supply your own brushes and other supplies. Paint and firings are free. Please register at the Metuchen Branch YMCA.
  • Computer Club-The club will be offered on Thursdays from 9:30-11:30AM, is free for members, $70 for program members( does not include the programs membership fee $40). Registration is required.
  • Computer Class I-Join our beginner computer class to learn the basics of the computer. The class is held on Wednesdays from 9:30AM-11:30AM. Fee free for members, $70 for program members( program fee of $40 is not included). Registration is required.
  • Computer Class II-Class meets on Tuesdays from 10AM-11:30AM, free for members $70 for program members( $40 program membership is not included).
  • Wii Clinic-The Metuchen Branch YMCA teens is sponsoring a month long clinic and is inviting seniors to learn how to play Nintendo Wii. The games are bowling, tennis and many others. Space is limited. The Clinic will be held on Tuesdays beginning October 7 through November 4, 2008 from 3:15 to 4:14PM. Registration is required, there is no fee for full members, and a $5 fee for program members.
  • Healthy Forum-Come to the YMCA and join us for an afternoon of snackes and an informative presentation on relevant health and safety topics. Special guest speakers will keep you abreast of the latest in medicine, health, fitness, political and social issues. Please register at the front desk to be included on the mailing list so that you can receive advanced notice of upcoming events.
  • How Do I....Come to the Metuchen Branch YMCA and enjoy a workshop run by our local teens to assist you with those annoying questions we all have about our home electronic. This workshop will be hand held electronics such as a cell phones, digital cameras, ipods, etc.
  • The Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program-A recreational program conducted in a heated pool, provides the opportunity for persons with arthritis to meet others and have fun. The participants are lead by trained personnel through a series of specially designed exercises, which, with the aid of the water's buoyancy and resistance, can help improve flexibility. The warm water and gentle movements can also help relieve pain and stiffness. This program has been developed by the Arthritis Foundation and the YMCA of the USA.
  • Seniorcise-Program designed especially for class participants to benefit from the buoyance and resistance of the water. Swimming skills not required. Click here to see schedule
  • Water Works-Exercise routines for senior is geared towards increasing strength and flexibility. Classes include warmup, strength and flexibility. Click here to see schedule

The Metuchen Branch YMCA is also concerned with our senior population that is “at risk” and in need of activity and socialization on a one on one level. No senior should be alone. The Metuchen Branch YMCA, through a grant and in conjunction with the Metuchen Senior Citizen Housing Corporation, is committed to helping those seniors. If you are a senior in need, or know of a senior in need, reach out to the Metuchen Branch YMCA to join our new programs designed to lift the spirit and minds of our seniors.      Outreach Programs

 

Television Conversion
According to the Federal Communications Commission, over the air services will no longer be delivered in the old analog format. All services will be delivered in a digital format. If you pruchase a converter box and need assistance in connecting it to your television, our volunteers will do their best to try to help you. Please contact Jean Vick to schedule an appointment, appointments are available Mondays through Fridays from 3-5PM.

MR. FIX IT

Is a program designed to assist Metuchen resident seniors, sixty and over, who are on a fixed income and cannot afford to make small maintenance repairs to their home to improve safety or they cannot climb the ladder to do the yearly leaf gutter cleanout. Please call Jean Vick at 732 548-2044, ext 217 to schedule an appoinment with a colunteer Mr. Fix-It.

WEEKEND REASSURANCE CALL

Are you a Metuchen resident senior receiving home delivered meals or visiting nurse services? Do you feel vulnerable on the weekends and wish a caring person would call just to check on you and say hello? Please contact Jean Vick at 732-548-2044, ext 217 to register your name and telephone number. A friendly Metuchen Branch YMCA volunteer will call you over the weekend to say hello, please reach out to us so that we can reach out to you!

EMERGENCY FOOD DELIVERY SERVICE

This program is designed to help the Metuchen resident senior in an emergency situation. If you are feeling ill or unable to get out and purchase the necessary foods, contact Jean Vick at 732-548-2044, ext 217. We have complied a list of only the most important items that you may run out of and cannot get to the grocery store to purchase for a few days. Our volunteer will take the order from our compiled list, purchase the items and deliver them to you. Payment must be made at time of delivery,this service is available Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.

FOOD SHOPPING ASSISTANCE

Wouldn't it be nice to have a little assistance when you need it at the grocery store? This program is aimed at helping Metuchen resident seniors during their shopping trip to the grocery store. If you feel this would make your life easier, please contact Jean Vick at 732-548-2044, ext 217 to make arrangements for one of our volunteers to meet you at the grocery store and assist you with your shopping.This service is available Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.

SENIOR BIRTHDAY RECOGNITION

Do you know a Metuchen resident senior celebrating their 90th birthday? Contact Jean Vick. Let your community celebrate with you by sending flowers and a birthday greeting.

TALKING BOOKS/NEWSPAPER READING

The New Jersey  Blind and Handicapped offer talking  books to eligible applicants, this service provides you with a tape recorder and story tapes of books at no charge. The Metuchen Branch YMCA has applications on hand. If you are a Metuchen resident senior and interested in receiving this service, please contact the Metuchen Branch YMCA. We will  assist you in completing the application and facilitating the delivery of the tape recorder and tapes directly to your home. Another service provided by the New Jersey Blind and Handicapped is the reading of a local newspaper to you. A simple application is required in order for a radio to be delivered to your home. A Metuchen Branch YMCA volunteer can assist you with the completion of the application so that a volunteer can read the local newpaper to you. CARE FOR THE CAREGIVER

Are you caring for a senior family member and need a little time to pamper yourself? Let the Metuchen Branch YMCA give you that time. If you are a Metuchen resident, simply contact the Metuchen Branch YMCA and let us know when you would like to bring your senior resident to our facility where a volunteer will read them, chat and keep them company while you do your workout, take a swim or just enjoy a little "me" time.

Do you have some time to donate to senior in Metuchen who is homebound? We have many seniors in town who are in need of a visit from friendly face. FALL LEAF CLEAN-UP

If you are a Metuchen resident senior and paying for leaf removal is a hardship, the Metuchen Branch YMCA has volunteers ready to assist you. Please contact the Jean Vick at 732-548-2044, ext 217 today to register for this program as there are a limited number of spaces available.

EMERGENCY SNOW REMOVAL

If you are a Metuchen resident senior and paying for snow removal is a hardship, the Metuchen Branch YMCA has volunteers ready to assist you. Please register for this program as there are a limited number of spaces available.As always, you can contact Jean Vick, the Director of Senior Citizen Services.

THERAPY DOGS INTERNATIONAL

Four-footed therapist give something medical science can't do, without the use of drugs. It has benn clinically proven that through petting, touching and talking with the animals, patients' blood pressure is lowered, stress is relieved and depression is eased. If you are interested in this service and a Metuchen resident senior, just contact Jean Vick at 732 548-2044, ext 217 to schedule a visit.

Oktoberfest at the Platzl Brauhaus.  Your day begins with hot coffee or tea and fresh apple cider donuts and scones.  Afterwards you can stroll down the leaf covered paths while breathing in the crisp country air, viewing the colorful foliage and working up an appetite for your four course family style dinner!  Dinner begins at 12:00 noon with hot beef barley soup and a tossed green garden salad.  Your entree selections are, smoked loin of pork with sliced fresh ham or a roasted half chicken. Please make your selection at the time of reservation with the front desk staff of the Metuchen YMCA.   Each entree is served with mixed vegetables and a potato pancake.  Also, served family style, are German bratwursts, spare ribs, red cabbage, sauerkraut, homemade applesauce and fresh apples!  But remember to leave room to sample the special bock beer, fresh squeezed apple cider and your hot German pretzel!  Dinner concludes with hot coffee, tea and dessert then relax and enjoy the German "oompah" band, dance a polka and watch the performance of the Schuhplatter dancers.  At 4:00 pm there is service a roast beef sandwich carved from a standing steamship roast.  The bus will leave from the Metuchen Municipal Pool Parking lot on Lake Avenue, Metuchen, NJ.  Please meet the bus at 8:30 a.m. for departure at 8:45 a.m.  The price for this trip is $67.00 per person.

Operation Jersey Cares.  In honor of Veteran’s Day, the Metuchen Branch YMCA is collecting donations for Operation Jersey Cares.  There will be collection boxes in the lobby of items needed.  These items will be shipped and distributed to the men and women serving in the military service.  See below for a list of these items. Click here to see the list of items most needed by our troops.

Operation DVD. 

In honor of Veteran’s Day, the Metuchen Branch YMCA is collecting donations for Operation DVD.  We will have an Operation DVD donation box in our lobby through the week of  December 1, 2009.  Please donate a gently used DVD for our servicemen and women,it will be greatly appreciated.

AARP Defensive Driving Class.  A two day class to improve your driving skills.  Register now at the Metuchen Branch YMCA.  Cost is $10.00 per person.  Upon completion of the course, students receive a Certificate of Completion which will entitle them to a 5% discount on the major portion of their automobile insurance premium for three years and two points will be deducted from their motor vehicle record, if applicable.  Registration is required at the front desk of the Metuchen YMCA.

 

December 10, 2008

Sight and Sound Millennium Theatre, The Miracle of Christmas.  Christmas memories jump to life as a brand-new sensory experience highlights the return of Miracle of Christmas to the Millennium Theatre. As the aroma of special holiday treats fills your breath, you'll have the opportunity to interact with characters and animals from the Nativity story. The Millennium Theatre will be grandly decorated with lights, greenery, Nativity scenes and a spectacular thirty-foot Christmas tree.  Dinner will be served at the Hershey Farms Restaurant after the show buffet style.  A snack will be offered on the bus.  The bus will leave the Metuchen Municipal Pool Parking lot located on Lake Avenue, Metuchen, NJ 8:30 a.m. return will be approximately 8:00 p.m.  The price for this trip is $96.00.  A payment option of $36.00 payable on Sept. 1; Oct. 1; and Nov. 1, 2008 is accepted.  

December 17, 2008 PNC FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS Come and kick off the holiday season with a ride to the PNC Art Center for the Festival of Lights.  Please meet our own YMCA busses at the Metuchen Municipal Pool parking lot on Lake Avenue, Metuchen, NJ at 6:45 p.m. for a departure time of 7:00 p.m.  Please register at the Metuchen Branch YMCA.  The cost is $10.00 per person.

St. Patrick’s Day Festival at Dolan’s in Spring Lake, NJ.  Come join the fun for a good old fashioned St. Patrick’s Day celebration.  The day includes live entertainment presented by Irish Tenor Mike Byrne and Green Derby Show Band, comedians, and bagpipe music.  Price per person is $68.89 which includes one hour open bar, fresh garden salad, caterers’ choice of pasta, soup or fruit, your choice of entrée of corned beef & cabbage, poached salmon or chicken Kiev, dessert, coffee, tea or decaf and wine and soda will be served during dinner.  Registration and lunch selection is made at the front desk of the Metuchen Branch YMCA.  The bus will leave from the  Metuchen Municipal Pool parking lot at 9:45 a.m. and return approx. 4:00 p.m.
