                    Summer Swim Sessions  

       Class Descriptions

When you take a swim lesson at the YMCA, you come away with more than the ability to swim. You come away with how Character Development, water safety, and fun are all part of your water experience.

Edison Branch members can begin to learn to swim at any age. Classes are formatted to meet the needs of the participants, and will help in developing a love of swimming.

Preschool Progressive Lessons (ages 3 - 5)

Designed for children 3 - 5 years. Classes are based on the YMCA Skipper Program. Floatation devices are used as teaching aids. Grouping by ability as listed below. Class ratio is 1 instructor for every 6 swimmers.

Pike
- Beginner
Eel
- Advanced Beginner
Ray
- Low Intermediate
Starfish
- High Intermediate

Youth Swim Lessons (ages 6 - 12)

Each skill level builds upon the preceding level, with seven levels covering all the strokes,

start and turn fundamentals, and safety skills.

Classes Offered:
Polliwog -
basic beginner
no pre-requisite skills needed.
Guppy -
beginner
pre-requisites: recommendation from Polliwog level or swim 25 yds. w/ floatation.
Minnow -
advanced beginner
pre-requisites: recommendation from Guppy level or swim 25 yds. w/rotary breathing and no floatation.
Fish -
low intermediate
pre-requisites: recommendation from Minnow level or swim 50 yds. front crawl and 50 yds. back crawl.
Flying Fish -
high intermediate
pre-requisites: recommendation from Fish level or swim 200 yds. front crawl, 50 yds. each of back crawl, breaststroke and dolphin kick.
Shark -
low advanced
pre-requisites: recommendation from Flying Fish level or swim 200 yds. individual medley.

Teen and Adult Swim Lessons

For teens and adults needing the very basics, or improvement of stroke techniques, these classes will fit the needs of any teen or adult.

For those not at ease in the water or who are new to swimming lessons

For those who would like to work on stroke development.
